According to knowledgeable sources, Bitcoin 2024 conference organizer David Bailey and head of strategic initiatives at Kraken Tracy Hoyos-Lopez had earlier recommended Gambaryan for several high-ranking positions. These included positions as head of the cryptocurrency division at the SEC and head of the FBI's cyber division.
In comments to the media, Gambaryan said that although he is not a political figure, he led several high-profile investigations during President Trump's last term as a federal IRS agent.
Binance CEO Richard Teng commented on his colleague's possible move to Trump's team:
Remind that last year, Nigerian authorities detained Gambaryan and Binance's West and East Africa director, Nadeem Anjarwalla, as part of an investigation into money laundering and tax evasion by the exchange.
Gambarian spent eight months at Kuje Correctional Center in Abuja. In October, the Nigerian government dropped all charges against him. Diplomatic interference and the extent of the defendant's involvement in the alleged crimes were cited as the main reasons for dropping the prosecution.
