Digital euro

The digital euro is a central bank digital currency (CBDC) proposed by the European Commission (EC) and the European Central Bank (ECB). As a CBDC, digital euro is to be issued by a central bank to a general public for retail use. Currently, money in a digitized form are issued by respective central banks to banks with a central bank account. According to the EU authorities, a digital euro would provide an electronic means of payment that could be used in the euro area.
