Key takeaways

  • XRPL Foundation outlines 24 proposed and approved upgrades
  • Implementation estimates reach $5.74 million excluding development labor
  • Lending and derivatives feature prominently in roadmap

The XRP Ledger Foundation has detailed 24 protocol upgrades in its 2027 development roadmap, outlining up to $5.74 million in estimated implementation-related costs as the network explores lending, perpetual futures, smart contracts and institutional financial infrastructure.

According to the foundation's official roadmap, the work includes 6,240 hours of development and another 6,560 hours of Ripple engineering review. Estimated costs range from $5.08 million to $5.74 million, excluding development labor.

However, only two amendments are classified as approved, while 22 remain proposals requiring further development, review or governance decisions. The roadmap does not guarantee that every feature will launch in 2027.

XRPL Roadmap Targets 24 Upgrades Across Institutional Finance

The development plan represents a significant expansion of XRP Ledger's financial capabilities.

Among its priorities are collateralized lending, structured credit, repurchase agreements, automated coupon payments and improved token infrastructure.

These features build on Ripple's earlier institutional DeFi roadmap, which emphasized regulated trading and native credit markets.

The newly detailed Loan Collateral proposal would allow borrowers to secure loans using assets valued through price oracles, introducing margin calls and liquidation procedures.

That development is separate from the existing XRPL Lending Protocol, which had reached 60% validator support on November 6 but remained below activation requirements.

Other proposals include a native perpetual futures exchange using collateral such as RLUSD, recurring token subscriptions and structured credit products resembling institutional loan facilities.

The roadmap also includes improvements to XRPL's decentralized exchange, extending work described in our AMM v2 coverage.

Why XRPL's Upgrade Costs Could Reach $5.74 Million

The foundation's estimate reflects more than writing new software.

Each full amendment generally requires an external security audit, estimated at $100,000, alongside reference implementation work and wallet compatibility updates.

The roadmap assigns $50,000 for a reference implementation and $25,000 for Ledger hardware-wallet and community-wallet support.

Complex proposals can require additional audits. Native perpetual futures and repurchase-market infrastructure are among the more expensive initiatives.

The framework also follows recent XRPL security improvements, demonstrating why testing and independent review remain important before deploying financial functionality.

Crucially, the $5.74 million estimate does not include all development labor, and it should not be interpreted as a finalized funding commitment.

When Could XRP Ledger's New Features Launch?

The roadmap identifies TokenPaychan and Vault Continuous Accrual as its two approved but unfinished amendments.

TokenPaychan would extend payment channels to issued currencies and Multi-Purpose Tokens. Vault Continuous Accrual would improve how lending-vault shares account for accumulated interest.

The latter builds on earlier XRPL Lending v1.1 improvements, but still requires additional implementation and approval.

Other proposed features include enhanced token permissions, smart contracts and confidentiality tools relevant to institutional financial activity.

Coinpaper previously covered XRPL's lending and privacy proposals, which illustrate how technical development can advance without immediate mainnet activation.
