Key takeaways
- XRPL Lending Protocol reaches 60% validator support
- Eight additional votes needed before activation countdown
- Native lending could expand institutional credit markets
The XRP Ledger's proposed native lending system has gained additional validator support, bringing its long-awaited decentralized finance upgrade closer to the threshold required for activation.
According to the November 6 XRPL amendment dashboard, the LendingProtocol amendment now has 21 supporting validators out of 35, representing 60% approval. The proposal gained two additional votes, leaving it eight short of the 29 required to begin the activation process.
XRPL Lending Gains Two Votes as Validators Consider Major Upgrade
The latest increase represents progress from November 4, when the proposed lending system remained ten validator votes short of approval.
The upgrade, known as XLS-66, would introduce native fixed-term lending directly into the XRP Ledger, allowing pooled digital assets to support loans without depending entirely on external smart contracts.
Three separate amendments form the proposed lending infrastructure.
LendingProtocol and LendingProtocolV1_1 each currently hold 21 supporting votes, while SingleAssetVault has 23, equivalent to approximately 65.7% support.
SingleAssetVault would allow participants to deposit XRP or eligible issued tokens into shared vaults and receive tokenized shares representing their holdings.
The LendingProtocol amendment would enable loan brokers to originate and manage loans using those pooled assets.
Meanwhile, the Lending Protocol v1.1 improvements introduce closed-ended vault structures and updated accounting rules.
Why Native Lending Matters for XRP Ledger
Native lending could expand XRPL's role beyond payments, stablecoin transfers and tokenized asset settlement.
The proposed framework would allow institutions to originate fixed-term loans using on-chain liquidity while maintaining traditional credit assessment procedures outside the blockchain.
Unlike many DeFi lending platforms, XLS-66 supports uncollateralized borrowing, with underwriting and risk management performed off-chain.
That creates opportunities for institutional credit, although it also introduces borrower default risk that blockchain settlement cannot eliminate.
The development builds on earlier XRPL institutional lending proposals, which outlined how vaults and loan brokers could support new financial products.
It could also complement growing stablecoin activity following Ripple's recent $110.57 million RLUSD mint.
However, increased lending functionality would not automatically translate into higher XRP prices, particularly when financial applications use issued assets rather than XRP itself.
Why XRPL Lending Still Has No Activation Date
Despite the latest voting progress, none of the three lending amendments has achieved the required supermajority.
Even if support reaches 29 validators, the network must maintain that approval continuously for two weeks. Any decline to or below the threshold resets the countdown.
A similar situation previously delayed XRPL's cleanup upgrade, demonstrating how temporary changes in validator support can affect deployment schedules.
That security-focused amendment subsequently activated in November, but it did not activate native lending.
