David Schwartz Says AI Agents Could Manage Everyday Finances Through XRP Ledger Infrastructure

Key takeaways

  • Schwartz envisions AI agents managing everyday financial tasks
  • XRPL has recorded approximately 13.5 million automated payments
  • Consumer financial management remains a future possibility

Ripple CTO Emeritus David Schwartz believes artificial intelligence agents could eventually manage everyday financial tasks, potentially changing how ordinary consumers interact with blockchain-based payments and decentralized finance.

Speaking in an October 18 Thinking Crypto interview, Schwartz described a future where autonomous software handles financial decisions and transactions on behalf of users, removing much of the complexity associated with cryptocurrency wallets and decentralized applications.

The comments arrive as XRP Ledger's automated payment ecosystem expands, with approximately 13.5 million agentic transactions recorded across 168 registered merchants earlier this month. However, Schwartz did not announce a personal-finance product or confirm when such capabilities might become available.

David Schwartz Sees AI Agents Transforming Personal Finance

Schwartz suggested that blockchain finance could eventually become as accessible to ordinary consumers as mobile applications became through Android and iOS.

The challenge, in his view, is developing financial services that people can use without understanding the underlying technology.

He described a hypothetical future in which AI agents manage people's money, potentially handling tasks that currently require users to navigate exchanges, wallets and other financial applications.

That could include automated payments, comparing financial services and executing transactions within predefined limits, although Schwartz did not identify those as features of a specific upcoming Ripple product.

Schwartz also highlighted tokenization and easing regulatory barriers as developments that could make blockchain finance more accessible.

His remarks build on earlier discussions of XRPL's financial evolution, including tokenized securities, lending and other services beyond conventional cryptocurrency transfers.

XRP Ledger Already Processes Millions of AI Payments

While autonomous personal financial management remains hypothetical, machine-to-machine payments are already operating on XRP Ledger.

Ripple introduced its AI Starter Kit in June, supporting applications that use the x402 payment protocol to purchase computing resources, APIs and other digital services.

The infrastructure allows software agents to send XRP or Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin without requiring a human to complete every individual checkout.

According to previously reported payment figures, XRPL AI Hub recorded approximately 13.49 million transactions across 168 registered merchants by October 11.

However, the same data showed only approximately 6,982 XRP and 12,010 RLUSD in cumulative settlements, indicating that much of the activity involved small payments rather than large financial transactions.

The distinction between XRP and RLUSD also matters because agents purchasing fixed-price services may prefer dollar-denominated settlement over exposure to cryptocurrency volatility.

Ripple's Wallet Expansion Could Help Bridge the Gap

One practical obstacle to consumer adoption is making blockchain wallets simple enough for people who have never managed private keys.

Ripple's recent Privy partnership aims to integrate XRP Ledger wallets directly into applications, reducing the need for separate wallet software.

Meanwhile, XRPL developers are exploring permissioned financial infrastructure that could help regulated institutions participate in decentralized markets.

Neither development establishes that AI agents can already manage retail investment portfolios or bank accounts through XRPL.

Such applications would require reliable authorization, transaction limits, security controls and safeguards against unauthorized spending.

Community validator Vet has separately suggested that 2027 could bring greater interaction between institutional and retail participants on XRPL's
