XRP vs RLUSD for AI Payments: One Moves Value, the Other Prices It

AI agents on XRPL can pay with XRP or RLUSD. The two assets share the same payment rail but solve very different pricing and settlement problems.

XRP vs RLUSD for AI Payments: One Moves Value, the Other Prices It

The distinction matters as machine payments move beyond experiments. Ripple’s XRPL AI Starter Kit supports x402 payments in either XRP or the dollar-backed RLUSD stablecoin, allowing software agents to purchase APIs, computing power and AI inference without a person manually completing a checkout.

Both assets settle over the same network, but that does not make them interchangeable. For many machine-to-machine purchases, RLUSD solves the pricing problem. XRP can solve a different one: moving native value on XRPL without depending on a dollar-denominated issued asset.

RLUSD Makes More Sense When an AI Agent Needs a Fixed Price

Consider an AI agent buying $0.10 worth of model inference thousands of times per day.

The seller wants to know that a quoted 10-cent service remains worth approximately 10 cents between pricing, payment and accounting. Ripple describes RLUSD as designed to maintain a value of one U.S. dollar and says it is backed by reserves of cash and cash equivalents.

That makes RLUSD the more natural option for invoices, subscriptions, API calls and other services denominated in dollars.

XRPL’s latest agent documentation illustrates the distinction directly: an XRP payment is described as the simplest native path, while an RLUSD example is explicitly labeled “dollar-denominated.” Both receive the same deterministic XRPL settlement guarantees.

This is one reason the recent AI-payment surge matters beyond the transaction count. AI commerce could increase XRPL usage without requiring every machine payment to take XRP price risk.

XRP Still Has a Role Even If Machines Prefer Stable Prices

The stronger AI-payment thesis for XRP is therefore not simply that every autonomous agent will spend XRP.

XRP is XRPL’s native asset, while RLUSD is an issued token. XRPL also supports cross-currency payments, meaning a sender can hold one asset while the recipient receives another through the ledger’s payment infrastructure. Ripple specifically notes that an agent can initiate a payment in one asset and deliver another through XRPL’s native exchange functionality.

That opens a more interesting use case: agents may not need to agree on the same asset before transacting.

An agent holding XRP could potentially pay a service that wants a dollar-denominated asset, while another workflow may choose XRP because direct native payments are simpler. XRPL documentation calls direct XRP transfers the simplest payment path on the network.

The underlying machine-payment infrastructure is already becoming more substantial. The community-run XRPL AI Hub currently indexes more than 7.25 million agent-payment transactions, with recent activity averaging roughly 181,000 payments per day. Those figures are not Ripple-reported adoption numbers, but they provide a live indication of activity associated with the emerging agent-payment ecosystem.
