Morrisons is reversing part of its earlier cost-cutting strategy by bringing back Market Street meat and fish counters to selected UK stores. The supermarket will also modernize the counters with more grab-and-go options and digital ordering technology.
Morrisons Store Counters are Returning
Morrisons is bringing back its Market Street counters to selected UK stores after customer feedback prompted the supermarket to rethink part of its cost-cutting strategy.
The retailer confirmed it will reopen the traditional manned meat and fish counters at a number of locations after previously closing dozens of them in 2025. At the time, Morrisons shut 35 meat counters and 35 fish counters, along with 52 cafés, 13 florists, four pharmacies, and all 18 Market Kitchen branches to reduce costs. The company said the affected locations were no longer profitable.
According to reports, senior executives later concluded that the closures went too far after hearing concerns from shoppers. As a result, the supermarket is now restoring the counters in selected stores, and will also start modernizing the Market Street experience.

The updated counters will offer traditional staffed service but will also feature flatbed displays and a wider selection of grab-and-go products. Morrisons has also been introducing digital ordering screens at pizza counters and expanding its range of prepared meals to upgrade the Market Street concept.
The supermarket said it has improved the efficiency of its counters by reducing waste over the past year, which makes them a lot more sustainable to operate.
A Morrisons spokesperson said the company's Market Street counters are still very much a key part of its identity and are an important feature that sets the retailer apart from competitors. The spokesperson added that the business learned valuable lessons from the earlier closures, which influenced its decision to bring the counters back to selected stores.
