Key takeaways
- BNB plunges over 8% following Binance security breach
- Binance freezes $3 billion and pledges customer reimbursement
- BNB faces critical $680 support after breaking $700
BNB plunged more than 8% during the October 29-30 cryptocurrency selloff, dropping below $700 as Binance confirmed a security breach affecting an estimated $6.3 billion in digital assets.
The token fell from approximately $760 to an intraday low near $683 before recovering toward $715–$720. The decline was particularly significant because BNB is closely associated with the exchange at the center of the incident, leaving traders assessing whether the rebound signals stabilization or merely a temporary recovery.
The selloff also reversed BNB's recent attempts to defend the $750 support area, which had previously offered a potential foundation for another move toward $800.
Binance Hack Sends BNB Below $700 as Exchange Freezes $3 Billion
According to Binance's October 30 security update, preliminary findings suggest attackers compromised a DevOps engineer's laptop, potentially gaining access to internal infrastructure used to authorize withdrawals.
The exchange estimated that approximately $6.3 billion in assets were affected, although that figure does not represent confirmed permanent losses. Binance said around $3 billion had already been frozen through cooperation with blockchain partners.
Binance also reported no evidence that wallet private keys were leaked and promised to reimburse affected customers using its Secure Asset Fund for Users, known as SAFU, alongside corporate funds.
The company temporarily restricted withdrawals while investigating the attack. A subsequent update indicated deposits were operating normally, while withdrawals remained paused pending additional security changes.
The incident, also covered in our Binance investigation, has raised questions about exchange security, asset recovery and whether customers will regain normal access to their funds.
BNB reacted more sharply than several major cryptocurrencies. Reuters reported that the token fell more than 8% to approximately $694, while Bitcoin and Ethereum also recorded substantial losses.
That relative weakness suggests traders were pricing in risks specific to Binance, although BNB is not an equity claim on the exchange and its market value does not directly measure Binance's financial condition.
BNB Price Prediction: Can $680 Prevent Another Breakdown?
BNB's fall below $700 marked a clear deterioration in its short-term price structure.
The token had previously traded around $740–$760, with earlier BNB price analysis identifying $750 as an important support area and $800 as a potential recovery target.
That setup has now weakened considerably.
The immediate downside zone sits between $680 and $685, close to the reported October 29–30 lows. A decisive break below this region could expose $670, followed by the psychological $650 level.
A deeper decline toward $620 would become a plausible scenario if selling pressure intensifies alongside further deterioration in exchange-related sentiment.
For bulls, $700 is the first level to defend during the recovery. Sustained trading above $720 could open a move toward $740–$750, where the previous support area may now act as resistance.
Reclaiming $750 would be an encouraging development, but BNB would still need stronger momentum to challenge $780–$800.
Can Binance Restore Confidence and Support BNB's Recovery?
BNB's immediate outlook depends on more than technical indicators.
Binance has pledged to cover customer losses and publish updated Proof of Reserves after completing its remediation process. Both developments could influence sentiment by providing additional information about the exchange's financial position.
However, an updated reserve report would not by itself establish that every affected asset has been recovered, and reimbursement commitments still need to be implemented.
Crypto selloff adds pressure. Bitcoin's earlier $77,000 support warning became relevant as BTC fell below that threshold during the incident, amplifying risk aversion across exchange-linked tokens.
