Key takeaways
- DTCC launches tokenization with 34 eligible Wall Street securities
- JPMorgan and Citi join 20 firms accessing blockchain infrastructure
- Canton goes live while Stellar integration remains scheduled for 2027
The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) has launched a blockchain tokenization service covering 34 eligible US securities representing approximately $30 trillion in market value, bringing one of Wall Street's largest infrastructure providers into live institutional tokenization.
The October 28 launch connects the Canton Network and DTCC's private Besu blockchain, with 20 financial firms signing access agreements. JPMorgan, Citi, Morgan Stanley, Bank of America, Fidelity and UBS are among the participants, according to DTCC's official announcement.
JPMorgan, Citi and Fidelity Join DTCC's Blockchain Rollout
The new DTCC Tokenization Service allows eligible institutions to convert traditional securities held at the Depository Trust Company (DTC) into blockchain-based representations.
The initial offering covers selected Russell 1000 stocks, exchange-traded funds and US Treasury securities. These assets remain under DTC custody while corresponding digital tokens can move between registered wallets.
Unlike synthetic tokens that merely track stock prices, DTC's digital representations preserve the underlying securities' existing ownership rights, economic entitlements and investor protections.
That distinction is important as Wall Street explores tokenized equities and blockchain-based investment products.
DTCC's service permits token transfers around the clock between authorized wallets, although converting traditional holdings into tokens remains subject to operating-hour restrictions.
The service is also not equivalent to launching unrestricted 24-hour stock trading. Its immediate value lies in improving asset mobility, collateral transfers and operational efficiency.
Canton Network Goes Live as Stellar Prepares for 2027
Canton is one of the two blockchain networks integrated into the service at launch, alongside DTCC's private Besu infrastructure.
The development follows successful production transactions in July involving more than 30 financial organizations, including securities lending, collateral transfers and repurchase agreements.
DTCC's broader institutional tokenization initiative has also attracted Ripple Prime, BlackRock and other financial companies, although participation does not establish that XRP or the XRP Ledger powers the new service.
Meanwhile, the Stellar blockchain is expected to connect during the first half of 2027.
That planned integration could extend DTCC's institutional infrastructure to another public blockchain, but Stellar is not among the networks currently supporting the live service.
Why $30 Trillion in Eligible Securities Matters
DTCC's subsidiary DTC already holds more than $114 trillion in securities, making the organization central to traditional market infrastructure.
Its new service operates within the regulatory framework established by a December 2025 SEC staff no-action letter, permitting tokenization of specified securities under defined conditions.
The potential advantage is not necessarily faster trading. It is the ability to mobilize existing securities as collateral without repeatedly moving assets through traditional intermediaries.
That could eventually reduce operational delays and improve capital efficiency for banks, brokers and asset managers, provided sufficient adoption develops.
The launch also builds on DTCC's earlier blockchain ambitions, moving institutional tokenization beyond isolated experiments.
