Key takeaways
- Bitcoin struggles to defend critical $80,000 support
- ETF demand remains important as institutional buying shifts
- Losing support could expose the $73,000-$75,000 region
Bitcoin is approaching another important test as the cryptocurrency struggles around $80,000 following a failed recovery toward $85,000 earlier this week.
BTC traded near $80,500 on October 24, extending its retreat from Wednesday's highs as investors assessed renewed selling pressure, weakening momentum and uncertainty surrounding U.S. interest rates.
The question now is whether Bitcoin can establish a durable floor near $80,000 or whether another breakdown could send prices considerably lower.
Bitcoin Faces a Crucial Test Around $80,000
Bitcoin's latest decline follows a volatile week in which the cryptocurrency briefly climbed toward $84,800 before surrendering much of its recovery.
That earlier rebound was supported by renewed exchange-traded fund inflows, but buying momentum failed to sustain a breakout.
According to Coinbase Institutional's October 23 research, the $80,000–$82,000 region remains especially important because it overlaps with the approximate cost basis of Bitcoin ETF investors and the 50-day moving average.
The analysis places the ETF cost basis near $81,300 and the moving average around $81,700.
Bitcoin trading below these reference points may leave recent buyers under pressure, particularly if further ETF withdrawals weaken demand.
The latest fund-flow figures illustrate that risk, with U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recording approximately $635.6 million in withdrawals on October 22.
Could Bitcoin Recover Toward $90,000?
A bullish recovery would likely begin with Bitcoin reclaiming $82,000 and establishing stronger support above its 50-day moving average.
The next significant resistance area sits around $84,000–$85,000, where the previous rally encountered selling pressure.
A sustained breakout could bring the $87,000–$90,000 region back into focus, although that would require renewed buying rather than another short-lived bounce.
Institutional demand remains central to this scenario.
Coinbase reports that U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs have attracted approximately $6.4 billion since August, compared with around $1.5 billion in purchases by corporate Bitcoin treasuries.
That marks a significant change from the first half of 2026, when corporations were the dominant institutional buyers.
Coinpaper previously examined how ETF inflows supported temporary recoveries despite the market's broader weakness.
However, recent corporate treasury activity suggests businesses are no longer exclusively accumulating Bitcoin, making consistent ETF demand increasingly important.
Bitcoin Price Prediction if $80,000 Breaks
The bearish scenario becomes more concerning if Bitcoin loses the $80,000 area and cannot quickly recover it.
Initial downside reference points include $78,000 and $76,000, followed by a broader $73,000–$75,000 support region identified by Coinbase Institutional.
A move toward $75,000 would represent a decline of approximately 7% from $80,500, while a recovery to $90,000 would require an advance of roughly 12%.
Macroeconomic conditions could determine which scenario develops.
Coinbase notes that rising producer prices and expectations of another Federal Reserve rate increase are creating additional pressure on risk assets.
Those concerns also influenced the recent Bitcoin outlook ahead of the October 28 monetary-policy decision.
