Key takeaways
- Air Canada cancelled five US routes, affecting flights to Boston, Nashville, Raleigh-Durham, Charleston and Seattle
- Weaker cross-border travel demand and rising fuel costs contributed to the airline's decision
- Air Canada is adding three new US routes for 2027
Air Canada removed five routes between Canada and the United States from its upcoming flight schedules. The latest changes affect destinations including Boston, Nashville, Raleigh-Durham, Charleston and Seattle, with most cancellations taking effect during the summer 2027 travel season.
The cuts come just days after Air Canada announced plans to introduce three new US routes through its expanded partnership with United Airlines.
Air Canada Cuts Flights to Five US Destinations
According to an Oct. 20 report from aviation schedule tracker AeroRoutes, Air Canada removed four seasonal routes from its summer 2027 schedule. The affected services include Vancouver to Nashville, Vancouver to Raleigh-Durham, Toronto Pearson to Charleston and Montreal to Seattle.
The airline is also discontinuing its Toronto Billy Bishop to Boston service beginning Dec. 1, 2026.
The latest adjustments follow earlier reductions to Air Canada's US network, including suspended New York JFK services and changes to several routes serving Florida and the American Midwest.
Why Is Air Canada Cancelling US Routes?
The cancellations come amid a challenging environment for airlines operating between Canada and the United States. Weaker demand from Canadian travelers and elevated jet fuel prices prompted carriers to reconsider the profitability of certain cross-border services.
According to Statistics Canada preliminary data, the number of Canadians returning by air from the United States fell 28% in May 2026 compared with May 2024. Air Canada previously said it regularly reviews its flight schedules to align capacity with passenger demand and seasonal travel patterns.
Air Canada Announces New US Routes Despite Cancellations
Despite eliminating five routes, Air Canada is expanding service to other American destinations.
On October 16, the airline announced three new routes for summer 2027:
- Toronto to Louisville, Kentucky, beginning April 28.
- Montreal to Indianapolis, Indiana, beginning June 1.
- Edmonton to Newark, New Jersey, beginning June 1.
The airline will also increase capacity between Edmonton and San Francisco by introducing larger Airbus A220 aircraft.
Meanwhile, United Airlines plans to launch new connections from Denver to Ottawa and Quebec City, alongside seasonal Newark-to-St. John's service.
For travelers, the latest changes mean fewer nonstop options on certain routes, even as new connections become available elsewhere.
