The new Edmonton-Newark connection will provide passengers with direct access to the New York metropolitan area and additional international connections through United Airlines' Newark hub.

United Airlines is also expanding its Canadian network with three routes, including seasonal service between Newark and St. John's, Newfoundland, marking the return of a connection that has been absent for more than a decade. The airline will also introduce flights from Denver to Ottawa and Quebec City.

Beyond these additions, United plans to increase frequencies between Washington, D.C., and Quebec City while boosting daily seat capacity between Denver and Winnipeg by 65%.

Air Canada will also deploy larger Airbus A220 aircraft between Edmonton and San Francisco to accommodate more passengers.

Airlines Seek Approval to Expand Partnership

The route announcement coincides with plans to renew and expand the carriers' Transborder Joint Business Agreement, which has operated since 2022. Under the existing arrangement, the airlines coordinate scheduling, pricing and commercial activities on certain Canada-US routes.

Since the partnership began, the carriers have established 20 new routes and jointly transported more than 4.3 million passengers. Their combined network also supports over 1,200 connecting itineraries.

However, the proposed expansion requires regulatory approval. Transport Canada confirmed that it is reviewing the arrangement to assess its potential impact on competition, consumers and the broader Canadian economy. Public consultations will remain open until Nov. 15, 2026.

For passengers, the new routes could provide shorter journeys, more convenient connections and more travel options between major Canadian and American cities.
