United Airlines is preparing its biggest international expansion yet after adding 10 new overseas destinations in 2027. It is also introducing its Airbus A321XLR on several thinner transatlantic routes.
The expansion will give United nonstop access to Okinawa, Toulouse, Luxembourg City, Marseille, Ibiza, Valencia, Terceira, Ljubljana, Olbia in Sardinia and Catania in Sicily. Eight of the destinations will be served nonstop from the US by no other US airline, according to United.

Most of the European additions will operate from Newark, including daily flights to Luxembourg beginning April 2 and Marseille from June 4. Washington Dulles will gain daily service to Toulouse from April 26, while San Francisco will receive three weekly flights to Okinawa from March 27.
United is also adding Los Angeles-Osaka, Washington Dulles-Milan and Denver-Paris service. San Francisco-Tel Aviv flights are scheduled to return March 28, operating three times weekly.
A321XLR opens smaller transatlantic markets
One of the most important parts of the expansion is United's new “Born to Explore” Airbus A321XLR. The aircraft will initially serve Luxembourg, Toulouse, Ibiza, Valencia and Marseille in 2027.

United's configuration includes 20 Polaris suites with privacy doors and 12 Premium Plus seats. This gives the narrowbody 32 premium seats.
It will also feature Starlink Wi-Fi for MileagePlus members, 4K OLED entertainment screens and Economy Plus seating that can provide extra elbow room through an open middle seat.
The A321XLR is well suited to routes like these because it can fly up to 4,700 nautical miles. This allows airlines to connect smaller city pairs without relying on a larger widebody jet. Airbus says the aircraft can also reduce fuel burn and CO2 emissions per seat by about 30% compared with previous-generation aircraft.
United plans to put the A321XLR on select domestic routes in September of 2026 before launching international service on Dec. 1 from Washington Dulles to Amsterdam and Dublin.
The 2027 expansion is part of an international push that has added 58 destinations to United's network since 2017. The airline now serves more than 160 international destinations and says it offers more flights and seats across both the Atlantic and Pacific than any other US carrier.
