Kraken Adds XRP-Backed DeFi Protection With $100,000 Payout Limit as Firelight Expands on Flare

Firelight adds FXRP-backed protection to Kraken's USDC DeFi vault, with payouts capped at $100,000 per address and 30-day coverage periods.

Kraken Adds XRP-Backed DeFi Protection With $100,000 Payout Limit as Firelight Expands on Flare

Key takeaways

  • XRP-backed Firelight protection expands to Kraken DeFi Earn
  • Eligible payouts are capped at $100,000 per address
  • Coverage excludes market losses and does not guarantee deposits

Kraken DeFi Earn users now have access to an additional layer of onchain protection supported by XRP-linked capital, after Firelight expanded its coverage to the platform's Protected Strategies USDC vault.

According to Firelight's October 15 announcement, the integration introduces predefined coverage terms, independent risk assessments and automated onchain payouts for eligible losses.

The development connects XRP-based decentralized finance infrastructure on Flare with a USDC investment product, although the protection is provided by Firelight and arranged by Sentora, not Kraken itself.

How XRP-Backed Firelight Protection Works on Kraken

Firelight is a decentralized coverage protocol operating on Flare Network. It launched on October 6 and uses a shared pool of staked FXRP to support protection across participating DeFi products.

FXRP represents XRP made programmable through Flare's FAssets infrastructure. Holders can contribute capital to Firelight by depositing FXRP into its protection vault.

The system builds on the broader XRP yield ecosystem, which has introduced ways for XRP holders to participate in decentralized lending, staking and liquidity strategies.

Unlike conventional staking arrangements, however, Firelight participants assume financial risk. Their deposits can be reduced if qualifying losses trigger coverage payments.

The newly covered product is Kraken's Protected Strategies USDC vault, previously known as Boosted USDC. The vault is curated by Sentora and allocates funds across selected DeFi venues, including Tydro.

This structure extends the practical use of XRPFi beyond generating yield for token holders. XRP-linked collateral can now help absorb eligible losses in DeFi products holding other digital assets.

Kraken USDC Vault Coverage Has a $100,000 Limit

Kraken's official documentation confirms that Firelight protection is available automatically to eligible deposits in the Protected Strategies USDC vault, without requiring users to purchase a separate policy.

The program covers specified technical and economic failures, including smart-contract exploits, oracle failures, governance attacks, certain bad-debt events, stablecoin depegs and redemption failures.

However, coverage is not unlimited.

Eligible payments are capped at $100,000 per depositor address during each coverage period. Aggregate program limits and the capital available in Firelight's pool can further restrict actual payouts.

Market losses, changes in annual percentage yield, user mistakes, insider theft and regulatory actions are excluded.

The coverage is also not legally equivalent to insurance, and neither Kraken nor Firelight guarantees that users will recover their full deposits.

Firelight's coverage terms are reviewed every 30 days based on the vault's composition and risk profile. The associated cost is deducted from vault yield rather than charged separately to depositors.

What Firelight's Expansion Means for XRP Holders

The integration gives XRP holders another potential source of demand for FXRP-based capital, although it does not establish how much additional XRP will be deposited into Firelight.

The network has already attracted interest from companies exploring XRP-based financial products. Previous institutional adoption initiatives have positioned Flare as infrastructure for deploying corporate XRP holdings into onchain strategies.

Firelight's approach introduces a different use case: XRP-linked capital supports protection rather than simply seeking returns from lending or liquidity provision.

If an eligible incident occurs, ZeroShadow investigates the event before an independent five-member risk consortium determines whether the loss qualifies. Approved payments are then funded through the protocol's collateral pool.

For XRP holders supplying that collateral, the trade-off is significant. Protocol emissions offer potential rewards, but positions remain exposed to reductions when valid claims are paid.

The Kraken integration therefore expands XRP's role within decentralized finance without eliminating the underlying risks of staking, smart contracts or yield-generating strategies.
