Bank of America Q3 2026 Earnings Miss Wall Street Expectations

According to the bank's official earnings announcement, net income declined to $6.9 billion, or $0.91 per share, during the three months ending Sept. 30. That compares with $8.3 billion, or $1.04 per share, during the corresponding quarter in 2025.

Earnings

Excluding the regulatory settlement, adjusted earnings reached $1.08 per share, which was slightly below analysts' expectations of $1.10. Meanwhile, quarterly revenue totaled approximately $30 billion, missing Wall Street's forecast of $30.58 billion.

The earnings decline was largely attributed to a $1.2 billion charge related to failures in the bank's anti-money laundering controls. US regulators identified shortcomings involving more than $5 billion in suspicious transactions that were not properly reported.

Investment Banking and Trading Revenue Decline

Beyond the regulatory penalty, Bank of America's investment banking operations experienced a challenging quarter. Investment banking fees declined 11% to $1.8 billion, thanks to weaker dealmaking activity during the recent geopolitical uncertainty, elevated borrowing costs and market volatility.

Sales and trading revenue also fell 5% to $5.1 billion, primarily because of weaker performance in fixed-income, currency and commodities trading.

However, the bank showed some resilience in other areas. Net interest income increased approximately 9% year over year to $16 billion, supported by loan growth and a larger deposit base.

Credit quality remained relatively stable, with net charge-offs totaling $1.35 billion, compared with $1.41 billion during the previous quarter.

Bank of America Stock Falls Following Q3 Results

Bank of America shares closed Tuesday, Oct. 13, at approximately $53.96 after a 1.14% decline during the regular trading session. Selling pressure intensified after the earnings announcement on Wednesday. BAC shares dropped approximately 4% in premarket trading.

The decline likely happened due to investor concerns about weaker profitability, disappointing investment banking performance and potential compliance expenses.

The stock already fell approximately 1.9% since the beginning of 2026 through Tuesday's close. Investors will now be watching whether stronger net interest income can offset regulatory expenses and weakness in capital markets activity during the final quarter of 2026.
