The US stock market will remain open on Columbus Day, Monday, Oct. 12, 2026, despite the federal holiday. However, investors should be aware that bond markets and many banks will be closed, which could affect certain financial transactions.
Both the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq will operate during their normal trading hours, and will allow investors to buy and sell stocks.
What Time Does the Stock Market Open on Columbus Day?
The NYSE and Nasdaq will follow their regular trading schedules on Oct. 12, and will open at 9:30 a.m. Eastern Time and close at 4:00 p.m. ET.
Investors will be able to trade major stocks, including Apple, Nvidia, Tesla, Microsoft and Amazon, without any holiday-related changes to regular exchange hours. However, some brokers may have different schedules for extended-hours trading.
Is the Bond Market Closed on Columbus Day?
Unlike the stock market, the US bond market will observe Columbus Day as a holiday. The Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA) recommended a full closure on Oct. 12 for US dollar-denominated fixed-income securities.
This includes Treasury securities, corporate bonds, municipal bonds and mortgage-backed securities. Individual firms ultimately determine whether to follow the recommendation.
Are Banks Open on Columbus Day?
Most major US banks will be closed on Columbus Day because it is a federal banking holiday. Although online banking and ATMs should remain accessible, certain transactions, including wire transfers and electronic payments, may experience processing delays.
Investors should also be aware that stock trades executed on Monday may settle later than usual because of the banking holiday.
When Is the Next Stock Market Holiday in 2026?
The next scheduled full stock market closure will be Thanksgiving Day on Thursday, Nov. 26. Both the NYSE and Nasdaq will reopen on Friday, Nov. 27, but trading will end early at 1:00 p.m. ET.
