Anthropic May Delay Its IPO but Rush Its Next AI Model

Anthropic may push back its IPO while considering an earlier AI model launch as OpenAI’s Astra gains enterprise momentum.

Anthropic May Delay Its IPO but Rush Its Next AI Model

According to a fresh Reuters report on Anthropic’s model and IPO plans, the company is considering releasing its next major model earlier than planned as OpenAI’s recently launched Astra gains traction with enterprise customers. At the same time, Anthropic could push its expected IPO beyond the U.S. midterm elections rather than proceed on the previously discussed October timeline.

That creates a striking contrast only days after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei publicly argued that the AI industry should slow the development of increasingly capable systems because of safety risks.

OpenAI Is Turning Up the Pressure

The immediate pressure comes from Astra.

OpenAI’s latest model has reportedly gained significant enterprise traction shortly after launch, threatening an area where Anthropic has built considerable strength.

That matters because enterprise customers are particularly valuable. Large companies can generate recurring usage, long-term contracts and much larger AI spending than individual subscribers.

Anthropic therefore faces a difficult choice.

Release its next model on the original timetable and risk losing momentum to OpenAI, or accelerate development at the same time its leadership is publicly warning that the industry is moving too quickly.

We recently covered the market reaction when Anthropic’s CEO warned that AI development should slow. The warning helped trigger selling across AI-linked stocks as investors questioned whether the industry’s enormous infrastructure spending could continue at the same pace.

Why Delay the IPO?

An IPO brings a different kind of pressure.

Once public, Anthropic would face quarterly earnings expectations, greater financial disclosure and investors constantly comparing growth with OpenAI and other competitors.

Waiting could give Anthropic additional time to strengthen revenue, launch another model and approach public markets from a stronger competitive position.

The company is already operating in an industry where spending expectations are enormous. Coinpaper has examined who is financing the $3.6 trillion AI infrastructure boom, while concerns about safety have increasingly collided with demands for faster commercial expansion.

That tension was also visible when Anthropic, OpenAI and Elon Musk called for greater AI restraint.
