Yet CPI often creates the bigger immediate market reaction because it is released earlier each month and gives investors one of their first major reads on consumer inflation.

What Is the Difference Between CPI and PCE?
The Consumer Price Index is produced by the Bureau of Labor Statistics and tracks prices paid directly by urban consumers.
PCE, produced by the Bureau of Economic Analysis, covers a broader range of spending, including some healthcare costs paid on consumers’ behalf by employers or government programs.
PCE also adjusts more readily when consumers change what they buy. If beef becomes expensive and shoppers switch to chicken, for example, PCE can reflect that substitution faster. The BEA groups the main differences between CPI and PCE into formula, weight, scope and other effects.
Why Does the Federal Reserve Prefer PCE Inflation?
The Fed prefers PCE because it is broader and adapts more quickly to changing spending patterns.
Most importantly, the Fed’s 2% inflation objective is explicitly based on PCE, so statements that inflation is above or below target should technically use PCE rather than CPI.
The latest July data showed headline CPI at 3.4% year over year, with core CPI at 2.5%.
July PCE inflation was 3.7%, while core PCE stood at 3.3%.

If the Fed Prefers PCE, Why Does CPI Move Markets So Much?
Timing is a major reason.
CPI is normally published before PCE, so traders use it to reassess interest-rate expectations, Treasury yields and the dollar before the Fed’s preferred inflation measure arrives.

Both reports include “core” measures that exclude food and energy because those categories can be unusually volatile.
