BRICS Payment Push Puts XRP Ledger’s Cross-Border Use Case in Focus
BRICS is exploring ways to connect national fast-payment systems and central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) for cross-border trade.
More notably, this does not mean the bloc has chosen XRP. But it does highlight a challenge the XRP Ledger was built to address when it comes to moving value efficiently between different currencies and payment networks.
According to RippleXity, BRICS is considering greater interoperability between national payment systems and CBDCs. If that effort moves forward, connecting currencies such as the digital yuan, digital rupee, digital real and digital dirham could become a major hurdle.
Creating a CBDC is only half the equation. The bigger challenge is making different sovereign digital currencies work together, quickly, efficiently and with minimal friction. This is where the XRP Ledger seeks to fill the void.
XRPL supports native cross-currency payments and uses its decentralized exchange to identify payment paths between assets. When two currencies lack sufficient direct liquidity, XRP can potentially act as a bridge:
Currency A → XRP → Currency B
XRPL documentation has used examples such as USD → XRP → MXN to illustrate how XRP can serve as an intermediary between currencies.
The appeal is simple: rather than requiring every currency to maintain deep liquidity against every other currency, a liquid bridge asset could connect otherwise fragmented markets.
The same concept could theoretically apply to CBDCs:
Digital Rupee → XRP → Digital Dirham
Digital Yuan → XRP → Digital Real
But these are illustrative examples, not existing BRICS payment routes. There has been no announcement that BRICS countries are routing their CBDCs through XRP or the XRP Ledger. Therefore, this distinction is critical.
BRICS’ CBDC Push Could Put XRP Ledger’s Cross-Border Vision in the Spotlight
The stronger XRP thesis is not that BRICS has adopted XRP. It is that the interoperability problem BRICS is trying to solve closely resembles the challenge XRPL was designed to tackle.
For cross-border CBDC payments to scale, countries need more than domestic digital currencies. They need interoperability, liquidity, reliable settlement and efficient ways to exchange different forms of value.
XRPL brings several of these capabilities together, including cross-currency payments, liquidity routing and atomic settlement.
On the other hand, the broader tokenization trend could make this challenge even more important. As currencies, stablecoins and real-world assets increasingly move onto digital networks, financial markets could become more connected, but also more fragmented. That creates a growing need for infrastructure capable of moving value seamlessly between different assets and networks.
XRP’s potential role, therefore, is less about becoming the “currency of BRICS” and more about functioning as a neutral liquidity bridge if institutions ultimately determine that it provides an efficient settlement path.
If BRICS succeeds in building a more interconnected cross-border payment ecosystem, one question becomes unavoidable:
How do different sovereign digital currencies communicate, exchange value and settle with one another? Well, this is precisely where the XRP Ledger’s original cross-border payments use case could regain the spotlight.
With XRPL 3.3.0 adding capabilities focused on privacy, batch transactions, permissioning and tokenization, the network continues to evolve beyond payments toward broader financial infrastructure.
Therefore, the challenge that BRICS is trying to solve could make one of XRP Ledger’s oldest use cases more relevant.
