Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD) shares fell about 5% after the company reported second-quarter 2026 results that exceeded revenue expectations but left investors focused on forward guidance and valuation. The stock declined even after quarterly revenue climbed 50% year over year, while analysts continued to point to long-term demand for artificial intelligence chips. 

The decline followed a pattern seen across several technology stocks where strong earnings did not immediately translate into higher share prices. Investors weighed revenue growth against expectations for future margins, AI spending, and competition within the semiconductor sector.

AMD Reports Strong Revenue Growth While Investors Assess Outlook

AMD reported second-quarter revenue that increased 50% from the same period last year, supported by continued demand across its data center and AI businesses. Growth also came from enterprise customers expanding investments in accelerated computing infrastructure.

The company's data center segment remained one of the largest contributors during the quarter. AI accelerator shipments and server processor demand continued to support higher sales as cloud providers expanded computing capacity to meet artificial intelligence workloads.

Wells Fargo Raises Price Target as Analysts Remain Positive

Wells Fargo increased its price target on AMD to $700 after reviewing the quarterly results. The revised target reflected expectations that AI demand could continue supporting revenue growth over the coming quarters.

Analysts continued to monitor AMD's competitive position against other semiconductor companies developing AI hardware. The company has expanded its portfolio of graphics processors and AI accelerators as customers increase spending on machine learning infrastructure.

Concurrently, another bearish call for AMD stock came when Elon Musk said during SpaceX's quarterly earnings call that the company would stop purchasing AMD chips and build its AI infrastructure exclusively on Nvidia architecture. 

The announcement marked a change from Musk's earlier position that his companies would split AI hardware purchases between AMD and Nvidia, adding another factor that weighed on investor sentiment.

AMD continues to position artificial intelligence as a core part of its long-term business strategy. The company has expanded investments in AI chips, software platforms, and partnerships designed to support enterprise computing workloads.
