Inside Ripple’s Institutional Strategy and the Rise of RLUSD and XRP

Ripple's long-term strategy has remained focused on building institutional-grade infrastructure that enables banks, payment providers, and enterprises to move value more efficiently across the globe.

Speaking with Grayscale Research's Charlie Perkins, Ripple Senior Vice President of Stablecoins Jack McDonald said the company's mission has remained unchanged since day one.

“Everything we do at Ripple is built around serving institutions and building institutional-grade infrastructure to help move value. The Internet of Value is really our core mission and has been since day one.”

McDonald emphasized that Ripple develops technology for financial institutions, aiming to make the transfer of money and tokenized assets as seamless as sending information over the internet.

This institutional-first vision underpins Ripple's partnerships with Mastercard, JPMorgan, OKX, and Ondo Finance. In May, the companies joined forces to bridge traditional finance with digital assets and accelerate the modernization of global financial infrastructure.

A major milestone from the collaboration was the first-ever cross-bank, cross-border redemption of tokenized U.S. Treasuries on the XRP Ledger. The pilot demonstrated how regulated financial institutions can securely issue, transfer, and redeem tokenized real-world assets across separate banking networks with greater speed and efficiency.

The successful test reinforced the XRP Ledger's growing role as enterprise-grade infrastructure for tokenized finance, highlighting its ability to eliminate many of the delays and inefficiencies that have traditionally hindered cross-border transactions while supporting the rapidly expanding real-world asset (RWA) market.

McDonald also explained how RLUSD and XRP serve complementary roles within Ripple's ecosystem. RLUSD provides a regulated, U.S. dollar-backed stablecoin for payments, treasury management, decentralized finance, and tokenized asset settlement, offering institutions the price stability required for large-scale financial operations.

XRP, meanwhile, functions as a bridge asset that delivers instant liquidity and near-instant cross-border settlement. Therefore, RLUSD and XRP give institutions flexible tools for stable settlement, on-demand liquidity, and efficient value transfer.

Looking ahead, McDonald said Ripple will continue expanding its institutional network while building the infrastructure needed for the next generation of finance.

As tokenization reshapes global markets, the company is positioning the XRP Ledger, XRP, and RLUSD as foundational technologies that connect traditional finance with blockchain-based capital markets.
