Anthropic Secures $3.4 Billion in Gas Generators as AI Data Center Power Demand Surges

Anthropic reportedly secured $3.4B in gas-generator commitments covering 1.7 GW as AI data centers face electricity shortages and equipment delays.

Key takeaways

  • Anthropic reportedly secures $3.4 billion in power equipment
  • Deal covers 1.7 gigawatts of natural-gas generation capacity
  • Electricity shortages threaten increasingly expensive AI infrastructure projects

Anthropic has reportedly secured approximately $3.4 billion in natural-gas generators to power artificial intelligence data centers, marking a major expansion into energy infrastructure as technology companies compete for increasingly scarce electricity supplies.

According to a November 8 report, the Claude developer agreed in late September to take over commitments for 1.7 gigawatts of heavy-duty generators from Texas-based OnePWR Solutions.

Transaction adviser Piper Sandler separately confirmed a $3.4 billion sale of OnePWR's power-generation platform to an unnamed AI laboratory. Neither Anthropic nor OnePWR has publicly confirmed the buyer's identity or full transaction terms.

Anthropic Takes Over $3.4 Billion in Caterpillar Generator Orders

The agreement reportedly involves generators originally ordered from Caterpillar approximately two years ago.

OnePWR had secured the equipment commitments but required additional financing to complete the transaction. Anthropic initially planned to purchase electricity from the supplier before deciding to take over the generator orders directly.

The arrangement also reportedly includes engineering and construction capabilities needed to install the equipment.

However, Anthropic did not acquire OnePWR itself, and no employees transferred between the companies.

The transaction reflects a growing challenge for AI developers: advanced computing hardware can become available long before the electricity infrastructure required to operate it.

As Coinpaper's earlier electricity analysis explained, data centers increasingly face years-long delays involving grid connections, transformers and power-generation equipment.

AI Data Center Electricity Demand Could Double by 2030

The reported acquisition comes as Anthropic expands its computing infrastructure alongside major technology companies investing heavily in artificial intelligence.

The company previously announced a $50 billion infrastructure initiative involving new data centers in Texas and New York.

Its expansion also includes substantial external computing agreements, including reported negotiations for additional capacity with Nvidia-backed Nscale.

According to the International Energy Agency, global data center electricity consumption could increase from 485 terawatt-hours in 2025 to approximately 950 TWh by 2030.

AI-focused facilities are expected to experience even faster growth, placing additional pressure on energy infrastructure.

The resulting competition is already creating opportunities for power companies. Google's previous 3.6 GW agreement with Constellation Energy demonstrated how AI demand is reshaping investment in electricity generation.

Natural-gas equipment offers another option, particularly where new transmission infrastructure cannot arrive quickly enough.

Anthropic's Power Strategy Raises Financial and Environmental Questions

Securing generators does not automatically guarantee that Anthropic can immediately operate another 1.7 GW of computing infrastructure.

The equipment still requires installation, fuel supplies, regulatory approvals and suitable data center locations.

Gas-fired generation also introduces additional operating costs and emissions, creating potential challenges as communities increasingly scrutinize AI infrastructure.

Those concerns have already affected OpenAI's expansion, while Elon Musk's xAI facilities face legal disputes involving gas-turbine operations.
