Key takeaways
- ARK buys $17 million in Coinbase and Circle shares
- Cathie Wood simultaneously reduces Bullish exposure by $8 million
- Binance hack intensifies pressure across cryptocurrency-linked stocks
Cathie Wood's ARK Invest purchased approximately $11 million in Coinbase and Circle shares on October 30, then added another $6 million on November 2 as cryptocurrency stocks struggled following Binance's $6.3 billion security breach.
According to ARK's trading disclosures, its investment funds acquired 64,208 Coinbase shares and 110,551 Circle shares across the two sessions, worth approximately $9 million and $8 million, respectively.
The buying coincided with a significant rotation within ARK's crypto portfolio. The firm sold roughly $8 million in Bullish shares over the same period, demonstrating selective positioning rather than a broad increase in cryptocurrency exposure.
ARK Buys Coinbase and Circle While Selling Bullish
ARK's latest purchases were distributed across three exchange-traded funds: ARK Innovation ETF (ARKK), Next Generation Internet ETF (ARKW), and Fintech Innovation ETF (ARKF).
On November 2 alone, the firm purchased 24,790 Coinbase shares worth approximately $3.4 million and 35,657 Circle shares valued at $2.6 million.
Meanwhile, ARK sold 104,172 Bullish shares worth about $2.3 million on Monday, extending Friday's larger reduction.
The decision contrasts with the firm's earlier Bullish accumulation, when Wood increased exposure to the exchange operator during another period of market weakness.
The buying arrived despite continued pressure on publicly traded cryptocurrency companies.
Coinbase declined 3.98% on Monday to $137.83, while Circle slipped 0.63% to $72.08. Bullish lost approximately 5.7%, closing at $22.54.
ARK has previously used market pullbacks to expand its Coinbase holdings, although its latest transactions do not establish Wood's expectations for near-term share prices.
Why Coinbase and Circle Are Drawing Attention
The purchases followed Coinbase's latest earnings report, which showed $719 million in third-quarter net income despite a 44% annual decline in transaction revenue.
The exchange generated $1.22 billion in revenue, while its growing prediction markets business and stablecoin services helped offset weakness in crypto trading activity.
Circle faces a different financial test ahead of its November 4 earnings announcement.
The USDC issuer relies heavily on interest earned from reserve assets, with stablecoin reserve income providing the overwhelming majority of its revenue.
Both companies therefore offer exposure to different parts of the cryptocurrency economy.
Coinbase benefits from trading, subscriptions and financial services, while Circle's performance depends heavily on USDC circulation, interest rates and distribution arrangements.
Binance Hack Adds Another Layer of Uncertainty
ARK's transactions followed the October 29 Binance security breach, which affected approximately $6.3 billion in cryptocurrency assets.
The exchange has promised to compensate affected customers, while billions in withdrawals have intensified scrutiny of centralized trading platforms.
The situation also has a direct connection to Circle. Binance previously acquired a $100 million equity stake in the stablecoin issuer and signed a five-year USDC distribution agreement.
