225 Million XRP Back $152 Million in Loans as December Repayment Deadlines Approach

Maple Finance holds 225 million XRP worth about $281 million against $152 million in stablecoin loans, with key maturities approaching in December.

Key takeaways

  • Maple holds 225 million XRP against $152 million in loans
  • Two major XRP-backed loans mature in December 2026
  • Repayments and refinancing could change XRP collateral demand

Approximately 225 million XRP, worth about $281 million, is backing $151.8 million in stablecoin loans through Maple Finance, with two major repayment deadlines approaching in December and a third scheduled for January 2027.

The positions, disclosed through Maple's syrupUSDC and syrupUSDT transparency dashboards, show how institutions can borrow dollars against XRP holdings without immediately selling the cryptocurrency. However, the approaching maturities raise questions about how much collateral will remain committed to lending.

The figures highlight an emerging source of demand for XRP beyond trading and payments, as institutional borrowers increasingly use digital assets to secure financing.

$281 Million in XRP Supports Three Institutional Loans

Maple's disclosures show 142.77 million XRP supporting its syrupUSDC product and another 82.31 million XRP backing syrupUSDT positions.

The combined collateral secures approximately $96.61 million in USDC loans and $55.19 million in USDT borrowing, equivalent to roughly $151.8 million in nominal stablecoin principal.

The three positions have different repayment schedules:

Loan principalXRP collateral valueMaturity
$41.61M USDC$74.59MDec. 4, 2026
$55M USDC$104.08MDec. 12, 2026
$55.19M USDT$103.02MJan. 15, 2027

The loans were approximately 179% to 189% collateralized at the reported valuations, meaning borrowers had pledged substantially more XRP value than the amount borrowed.

Importantly, Maple's loans originate from Ethereum-based liquidity pools while the XRP collateral remains in native custody on the XRP Ledger.

This arrangement differs from the proposed XRPL Lending Protocol, which is designed around onchain credit infrastructure and offchain underwriting rather than automated collateral liquidations.

What Happens When the XRP Loans Mature?

The December deadlines do not automatically mean that millions of XRP will be sold.

Borrowers can repay their obligations and seek the release of their collateral, refinance existing loans, or negotiate new borrowing arrangements that allow the XRP to remain pledged.

The distinction matters because XRP used as collateral can stay committed for months, rather than moving briefly between wallets during payment settlement.

Ripple has been exploring a similar institutional credit model, while RippleX previously described XRP collateral as a potentially important use case for institutional lending.

However, refinancing is not guaranteed. If XRP prices decline enough to breach contractual collateral requirements, borrowers may need to pledge additional assets or reduce their outstanding debt.

Under Maple's lending procedures, an unresolved margin call can eventually lead to collateral liquidation, potentially turning pledged XRP into market sales.

There is currently no confirmed indication that these three positions are facing liquidation.

XRP Lending Growth Comes With Important Risks

The size of Maple's collateral also has implications for the XRP Ledger's decentralized finance statistics.

DefiLlama attributed approximately $281 million of XRP Ledger DeFi value to Maple, compared with roughly $318 million across the network.

That means the lending arrangement represented approximately 88% of the reported total at the time, although the actual financing originated on Ethereum.

Other protocols are expanding similar use cases. Flare has already introduced XRP-backed borrowing using RLUSD, while more than 145 million FXRP had been minted through its network by late September.

Meanwhile, institutional projects involving Ripple and Clearpool are developing additional credit infrastructure.
