Shares opened at ₹1,358 on the National Stock Exchange, comfortably above their IPO price of ₹1,119. The impressive debut came after Jio raised approximately $3.2 billion through its public offering.
Jio IPO Attracts Record Investor Demand
Investor enthusiasm was evident even before trading began, as Jio's IPO attracted approximately $77 billion in bids. The offering was oversubscribed 22.19 times, while qualified institutional investors subscribed more than 70 times their allocated shares.
The company serves more than 530 million customers, which makes it one of the world's largest mobile operators. It also counts technology giants Meta and Alphabet's Google among its major investors.
After its debut, Jio overtook Bharti Airtel and HDFC Bank in market capitalization, placing it behind parent company Reliance Industries in India's corporate rankings.
Analysts See Growth Potential Despite Valuation Concerns
Jio's strong debut also attracted attention from major brokerages. Nomura, Motilal Oswal and Elara Capital initiated coverage with Buy recommendations. Analysts specifically pointed out the company's telecommunications leadership, broadband expansion and opportunities in artificial intelligence and cloud computing as potential drivers of future growth.
For the fiscal year ending March 2026, Jio reported a 14.6% increase in revenue to ₹1.47 trillion, while profit climbed 15.1% to approximately ₹300.49 billion.
However, the stock's sharp opening rally has also raised questions about its valuation. Motilal Oswal assigned a ₹1,350 price target, below Jio's ₹1,358 debut price, which suggests that some anticipated gains were already reflected in the opening valuation.
Competition, infrastructure spending and possible changes to India's telecommunications regulations are also important risks.
Can Jio Platforms Stock Maintain Its Momentum?
Jio's very impressive listing is a massive milestone for India's equity markets and Ambani's efforts to transform Reliance into a diversified technology and consumer powerhouse. However, investors will now be watching whether the company can translate its enormous subscriber base and digital expansion plans into sustained earnings growth.
With its valuation already exceeding $130 billion, Jio's ability to justify its premium price could determine whether the stock extends its debut rally or faces selling pressure in next few trading sessions.
