Gold Price Prediction: Peter Schiff Calls $4,145 a Gift as US Inflation Hits 3.7%

Key takeaways

  • Peter Schiff calls gold at $4,145 a buying opportunity
  • US consumer inflation accelerates to 3.7% in September
  • Higher rate expectations pressure gold despite inflation concerns

Gold advocate Peter Schiff has called the precious metal's decline toward $4,145 a buying opportunity, arguing that investors are misinterpreting the latest surge in US inflation and the Federal Reserve's ability to contain it.

In an October 17 post on X, Schiff pointed to stronger-than-expected consumer, producer and import-price reports released during the week. He argued that investors sold gold because they expected the Federal Reserve to respond with tougher monetary policy.

Peter Schiff Calls Gold at $4,145 a Gift After Inflation Shock

Schiff's latest comments follow a difficult week for precious metals.

Gold declined more than 1% on October 14 as unexpectedly strong inflation data strengthened expectations of further US interest-rate increases. Prices rebounded during Thursday's session before weakening again.

By Friday, spot gold traded around $4,165 per ounce, putting the metal on course for a weekly decline of approximately 0.7%.

Schiff nevertheless described gold at $4,145 as an unusually attractive opportunity, arguing that persistent inflation should eventually outweigh the market's expectations for tighter monetary policy.

His position contrasts with the immediate reaction of investors, who have been favoring interest-bearing assets as Treasury yields remain elevated.

The latest volatility also follows an earlier gold selloff, when rising oil prices increased concerns about additional Federal Reserve tightening.

US Inflation Reaches 3.7% as Producer Prices Jump 6.3%

The economic figures behind Schiff's warning were substantial.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, US consumer prices increased 3.7% year over year in September, above the 3.6% market forecast and August's 3.4% reading.

Producer prices climbed 1.3% during September, their largest monthly increase since March 2022. The annual PPI inflation rate reached 6.3%.

Import prices provided another inflation surprise on October 16, increasing 1.1% month over month against expectations of approximately 0.8%.

Over the previous 12 months, import prices surged 8.1%, their strongest annual increase since July 2022.

Gold Price Prediction: Can Bullion Recover Above $4,200?

Gold's immediate outlook depends partly on whether inflation expectations or interest-rate expectations dominate investor behavior.

Higher inflation can increase demand for assets perceived as stores of value. However, higher bond yields raise the opportunity cost of holding gold, which does not generate interest.

That tension explains why bullion can decline even when inflation accelerates.

Gold's recent recovery above $4,150 also demonstrated the importance of changing Treasury yields and dollar movements.

A sustained recovery above $4,200 would strengthen the case for renewed upward momentum, while continued weakness around $4,145 could bring the psychologically important $4,000 region back into focus.

The latter level has also featured in Morgan Stanley's outlook, supported by expectations for physical demand and central-bank purchases.
