Strategy Buys $21.5M in Bitcoin Despite Paying $86,194 Per BTC

Michael Saylor's Strategy buys 250 BTC for $21.5M, lifting holdings to 848,250 BTC, while repurchasing $192M in preferred stock.

Key takeaways

  • Strategy purchases 250 Bitcoin for approximately $21.5 million
  • Total Bitcoin holdings increase to 848,250 BTC
  • STRC repurchases reach $192 million, dwarfing Bitcoin purchases

The acquisition, disclosed October 12, was Strategy's smallest Bitcoin purchase of 2026. The company paid an average of $86,194 per coin, roughly $3,000 above Bitcoin's reported market price when the announcement emerged.

However, Strategy spent considerably more on repurchasing its own preferred stock, allocating $192.4 million to STRC buybacks during the same reporting period.

Strategy's Bitcoin Holdings Reach 848,250 BTC

Strategy acquired the additional 250 BTC between October 5 and October 11, increasing its treasury to more than 4% of Bitcoin's maximum 21 million supply.

The company has now spent approximately $64 billion accumulating Bitcoin at an average acquisition price of $75,444 per coin.

Its latest purchase follows the 334 BTC acquisition announced October 5, which cost $28.7 million at an average price of $85,839.

That means Strategy has added 584 BTC for approximately $50.2 million across its two latest weekly disclosures.

The company funded the latest acquisition primarily through the sale of 125,183 MSTR common shares, generating approximately $21 million. Another $500,000 came from available cash.

Strategy Repurchases $192M in STRC Preferred Stock

The larger financial development involves Strategy's capital allocation.

Alongside its Bitcoin purchase, the company repurchased approximately 1.9 million shares of STRC preferred stock for $192.4 million.

That represents nearly nine times the amount spent acquiring Bitcoin during the week.

STRC is part of Strategy's digital credit financing model, which provides investors with preferred dividends while supporting the company's broader Bitcoin treasury strategy.

By repurchasing preferred shares, Strategy can reduce future dividend obligations, particularly when those securities trade below their stated value.

The company has increasingly used preferred stock repurchases alongside Bitcoin accumulation as it manages borrowing costs and investor returns.

Why Strategy Is Buying Less Bitcoin

The smaller acquisition comes while Strategy maintains approximately $5.5 billion in combined U.S. dollar reserves and deployable cash.

Of that amount, $4.88 billion is held in its designated USD Reserve, with another $640.5 million classified as USD Cash.

The distinction matters because Strategy uses these liquidity pools for different purposes, including servicing financial obligations and managing future capital deployments.

Meanwhile, Bitcoin remains well below its October 2025 record, putting renewed attention on corporate treasury exposure and the performance of Bitcoin-related stocks.
