Alphabet shares gained about 2.3% after Google unveiled Gemini 4 Argon, a new flagship artificial intelligence model designed to compete more directly with the most advanced systems from OpenAI and Anthropic.
Google says Gemini 4 Argon is built for complex, long-running professional workloads spanning software engineering, financial research, legal work and cybersecurity. The model is initially being made available to trusted cybersecurity partners before a broader rollout to developers, enterprises and consumers.
The launch gives Alphabet a fresh AI catalyst after months of delays that previously weighed on investor confidence.
Gemini 4 Takes Direct Aim at OpenAI and Anthropic
Google is positioning Argon against OpenAI’s Astra and Anthropic’s Opus at the frontier end of the AI market.
The company says its internal benchmarks show Argon competing with or outperforming rival models across several coding and cybersecurity tests, although Reuters noted that it still trails competitors on some coding tasks.
Gemini 4 also arrives after Google abandoned plans to release Gemini 3.5 Pro, whose repeated delays had already caused Alphabet stock to fall more than 4% in July.
That makes Argon more than another routine model update. It is effectively Google’s attempt to reset its flagship AI roadmap after losing time while OpenAI and Anthropic continued releasing increasingly capable systems.
Google Is Also Competing on Cost
Performance is only one part of the strategy.
Gemini 4 Argon is being introduced at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, giving Google another way to challenge premium AI offerings as model costs become increasingly important for enterprise customers.
That pricing pressure fits a broader AI token price war that has already pushed inference costs sharply lower across the industry.
Alphabet also has an advantage that standalone AI labs do not: Google can distribute Gemini through Search, Cloud, Workspace, Android and its developer ecosystem. Earlier this year, strong AI and cloud growth helped Google stock reach a record high.
