Sports bettors who compare odds before every bet collect about 5% more on each winning bet than bettors who stick to one site, according to a report by WagerBeasts, a sports betting analytics website that tracks odds across more than 60 sportsbooks, betting exchanges and prediction markets.
The study compared the last price 59 betting sites offered in the hour before kickoff on 488 games across eight sports, played between 18 and 23 September 2026. The sites almost always agreed on who was likely to win. They disagreed, often by a lot, on how much they would pay if you were right.
One upset, a $75 difference
On Sunday 20 September, SC Paderborn beat TSG Hoffenheim 3-1 in the Bundesliga. Going in, the betting market gave Paderborn a 24.5% chance. Fifty-five of the sites WagerBeasts tracks had a price on the game in the last hour before kickoff, and what they paid on a Paderborn win varied widely.
| Site | Type | $100 on Paderborn, price on screen | After fees |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coolbet | Licensed European sportsbook | $415 | $415 |
| Pinnacle | Offshore sportsbook | $409 | $409 |
| Novig | Prediction market | $408 | $408 |
| Matchbook | Betting exchange | $420 | $407 |
| Betfair Exchange | Betting exchange | $420 | $404 |
| Polymarket | Prediction market | $401 | $401 |
| Kalshi | Prediction market | $417 | $396 |
| bet365 | Licensed sportsbook | $390 | $390 |
| FanDuel | Regulated US sportsbook | $390 | $390 |
| DraftKings | Regulated US sportsbook | $380 | $380 |
| BoyleSports | Licensed UK and Irish sportsbook | $340 | $340 |
Returns include the $100 stake. Kalshi is shown after its trading fee, Betfair Exchange after 5% commission on winnings and Matchbook after 4%. Polymarket's price already includes its fee. Highest figure in each column in bold.
A Paderborn backer at Coolbet collected $75 more than one at BoyleSports, for the same bet on the same result. The typical sportsbook paid $385. WagerBeasts runs the same comparison for every match on its Bundesliga predictions page.
The table holds a second lesson. The biggest numbers on screen, $420 at the two betting exchanges and $417 at Kalshi, were not the best deals. Once commission and trading fees came off, the top payout belonged to Coolbet, an ordinary licensed sportsbook. The favorite showed a smaller gap: $100 on Hoffenheim would have returned between $170 and $181 after fees, depending on the site.
About $5 on every $100
That game was an extreme case, but the pattern held across all 488. On the same outcome, the best available odds paid a median 5.1% more than the middle sportsbook and 10.2% more than the worst. After fees, the gaps were 4.4% and 9.6%. Soccer had the widest gaps of any sport and hockey the narrowest.
On a $100 bet at even money, that is roughly $5 for checking a second site and $10 for avoiding the worst one, on every bet, before any skill at picking winners comes into it. WagerBeasts also found that the market's odds are an accurate forecast: across 3,753 games, favorites priced at 61.2% won 60.7% of the time. That makes the price you get one of the few things a bettor can reliably control.
Who usually has the best odds
No single type of site wins every time, which is why checking matters. Here is how often each type had the best odds on an outcome, first on the price shown and then after each site's fees:
| Type of betting site | Best odds, price shown | Best odds, after fees |
|---|---|---|
| Prediction markets | 36.4% | 38.5% |
| Offshore sportsbooks that take crypto | 19.9% | 27.6% |
| Regulated US sportsbooks | 10.2% | 14.5% |
| Regulated UK, European and Australian sportsbooks | 7.1% | 12.1% |
| Crypto sportsbooks | 3.3% | 3.7% |
| Betting exchanges | 23.0% | 3.3% |
877 outcomes that at least three sites priced.
Betting exchanges look like the second-best deal until their commission is counted, and then they almost disappear from the top spot. Among individual sites, the prediction market Novig had the best odds on 54% of the outcomes it priced after fees, and Pinnacle on 20%, mostly on underdogs. At the other end, nine well-known sportsbooks that priced at least 200 outcomes never had the best odds once.
It works for over/unders and handicaps too
The gap is not limited to bets on who wins. On over/under bets on the total score, the best available odds paid 4.9% more than the typical sportsbook. On handicap (spread) bets, 4.6% more. The ranking of the cheapest types of site was the same in all three.
Bet late, and check the timestamp
Timing matters, though not the way many bettors assume. The fees built into the odds barely changed during the final day before a game. What changed was how many sites had a price up. Twenty hours before kickoff, the best odds beat the typical sportsbook by 4.2%. In the last hour, with more sites posting prices, the gap was 4.9%. No site cut its fee. More sites showed up, so the best one got better.
One warning applies to any odds-comparison screen. Betting sites do not update every price all the time, and a number that has stopped moving can sit on the page long after the rest of the market has moved on. In the sample, a third of the final prices were more than an hour old by kickoff. A stale price is often the biggest number on the screen, and it is not always a price you can actually get. WagerBeasts left stale prices out of its comparison. On any screen, look at when a price was last updated, not just the number.
How to use this
- Compare at least a few sites before every bet. The best payout moves around from game to game, and even between the two teams in one game.
- Compare after fees. On exchanges and on Kalshi, the number on screen is not what you get paid.
- Bet closer to kickoff. More sites are pricing the game, so the best available odds tend to be better.
