Absa Corporate and Investment Banking is now offering digital asset custody in South Africa using Ripple’s custody technology, giving institutional clients a regulated way to safeguard crypto assets and manage private keys through a major African bank.
Absa describes the new service as a secure, regulated environment for institutional digital assets on its Digital Asset Custody platform. The bank says the system applies traditional financial-industry standards around governance, approvals, compliance and recoverability rather than treating crypto custody as a separate, lightly controlled product.
The timing matters because Sub-Saharan Africa received more than $205 billion in onchain crypto value between July 2024 and June 2025, according to Chainalysis, up roughly 52% from the previous year.
Absa Is Moving Crypto Custody Inside the Bank
This is not simply another wallet product.
Absa says its custody architecture protects keys and authorizations inside secure hardware environments and uses deterministic key derivation instead of permanently storing static private keys. The bank also emphasizes recoverability and institutional approval controls.
That is important because the biggest obstacle for many corporations is not buying digital assets. It is proving who controls them, how access is governed and what happens if a key is lost or compromised.
Absa’s Head of Digital Product for Custody, Robyn Lawson, explains in the bank’s custody overview that institutional adoption is shifting the debate from “who holds the keys?” toward how those keys are governed.
Ripple Is Becoming More Than an XRP Payments Company
The second angle is Ripple itself.
The company first announced its Absa custody partnership in October 2025, making Absa its first major custody partner in Africa.
Since then, Ripple has continued expanding custody capabilities alongside payments, RLUSD and tokenization.
