Shopify shares jumped about 7% Tuesday after the company deepened its integration with Meta’s new AI agent, Muse, allowing the assistant to complete purchases across Shopify-powered stores through Shop Pay.
The move gives Shopify a potentially important role in the emerging market for agentic commerce, where AI systems do more than recommend products, they can search, compare and actually complete transactions on a user’s behalf.
That fits a broader shift toward AI agents that can make payments autonomously, turning software from an assistant into an active participant in commerce.
Why Shopify Investors Care
The key question is whether AI agents bypass e-commerce platforms or make them more valuable.
Shopify is positioning itself as the transaction layer behind those agents. Its merchant dashboard already lists Meta as an AI sales channel, allowing sellers to expose products through Shopify Catalog and manage direct checkout access.
Shopify has also been building its own AI commerce stack through tools such as Sidekick and Agentic Storefronts, part of the broader strategy behind its recent AI and platform expansion.
Agentic Commerce Is Moving Into Production
The Shopify-Meta integration is part of a larger trend.
AI-powered payments are already moving beyond demos. Mastercard has been developing agentic payment infrastructure, while blockchain projects are experimenting with machine-to-machine transactions and programmable spending controls.
The XRP Ledger, for example, has already been used for nearly one million AI-agent transactions, showing how autonomous software can pay for APIs, cloud services and digital resources without manual checkout.
Shopify itself has also been linked to crypto-native commerce, including an XRP Ledger payment and rewards app targeting millions of merchants.
