Ripple Unlocked 1 Billion XRP — Why Didn’t the Price Crash?

Ripple released 1 billion XRP from escrow on Sept. 1, yet XRP avoided the selloff some traders feared. Here’s why the headline number can be misleading.

Ripple Unlocked 1 Billion XRP — Why Didn’t the Price Crash?

Ripple unlocked 1 billion XRP worth roughly $1.38 billion on Sept. 1, creating what looked like an obvious bearish catalyst.

But XRP didn't crash.

The release came through three transactions of 500 million, 400 million and 100 million XRP. XRP was around $1.38 when the tokens were released and traded near $1.42 five days later.

The reason is important: unlocking 1 billion XRP does not mean Ripple sold 1 billion XRP.

700 Million XRP Went Back Into Escrow

Ripple created its escrow system to make XRP supply releases more predictable. Up to 1 billion XRP becomes available each month, but unused tokens can be placed back into new escrow contracts.

That is exactly what happened in September.

After the latest release, 700 million XRP was returned to escrow, leaving 300 million outside the newly created escrows. That does not mean the remaining 300 million was immediately sold on exchanges.

This is why the headline “1 billion XRP unlocked” can exaggerate the amount of new supply actually hitting the market.

Why XRP Barely Reacted

The other reason is predictability.

Ripple's monthly unlocks have happened for years, meaning traders know they are coming. It's the same dynamic when Ripple released 1 billion XRP in June without the entire amount suddenly entering circulation.

Meanwhile, institutional demand for XRP has strengthened.

U.S. spot XRP ETFs attracted $14.38 million on Sept. 1, extending an 11-session inflow streak. Coinpaper has tracked how XRP ETFs kept attracting money while Bitcoin funds suffered outflows.

That doesn't mean ETF demand automatically cancels out Ripple's supply. But it gives XRP another source of buying that didn't exist during earlier years of the escrow program.

The XRP ecosystem is changing too. The XRPL AI payment activity jumped 29%, while RippleX has discussed XRP collateral as a potential institutional use case.

Do XRP Unlocks Still Matter?

Yes, but the 1 billion XRP figure isn't the number investors should watch on its own.

What matters is how much Ripple re-escrows, how much it retains, where those tokens subsequently move and whether exchange supply actually increases.

September illustrates that difference clearly: 1 billion XRP was unlocked, but 700 million went back into escrow.

The next monthly release will inevitably produce another dramatic billion-XRP headline. For XRP's price, however, what Ripple actually does with those tokens matters far more than the unlock itself.
