Why Is Google Stock Rising After a Volatile Week?

Alphabet shares are rebounding after a volatile week. Here’s why Google stock is rising and what investors are watching next.

Alphabet shares ended last week on a stronger note, with Google parent Alphabet’s Class A stock gaining 1.77% on Friday to close at $338.50. The move extended Thursday’s advance and helped the stock recover from a sharp decline earlier in the week.

The rebound also came as other technology stocks recovered. Alphabet’s gain outpaced the Nasdaq Composite on Friday, which suggests that buyers were willing to return to the stock despite lingering concerns around artificial intelligence spending, regulation and interest rates.

Early Monday trading pointed to further upside, with Alphabet shares trading around $344 in premarket activity, roughly 1.6% above Friday’s closing price. The move puts the stock within reach of its recent highs after several volatile sessions.

AI Spending and Regulation Remain in Focus

Alphabet’s latest price swings come as investors digest the enormous amounts of money Google is committing to artificial intelligence infrastructure. Last week, Google announced plans to invest around $15 billion in AI infrastructure in Finland over the next two years.

The project includes new data centers and a long-term nuclear power agreement. Alphabet shares fell after the announcement as investors weighed the potential benefits of expanding AI capacity against the enormous costs involved.

Regulatory pressure is also hanging over the company. Google recently announced changes to its European search business to comply with the European Union’s Digital Markets Act after a regulatory fine.

On the bright side, there has also been some positive news on the regulatory front. Earlier this month, Google avoided a forced breakup of parts of its advertising technology business after a US judge opted for behavioral remedies rather than ordering the company to sell its AdX exchange.

AI-related stocks are also facing uncertainty after calls from technology executives for a slower pace of advanced AI development contributed to weakness across the sector.

For Google stock, investors are currently balancing two competing narratives: Alphabet’s ability to capitalize on rising AI demand and the mounting cost of building the infrastructure needed to compete.
