American Airlines Joins Trump Accounts Push With $1,000 Employee Match

American Airlines joins more than 50 companies supporting Trump Accounts with a $1,000 match for eligible employees’ children.

American Airlines is joining a growing group of major US employers offering financial support for Trump Accounts, and pledged to contribute an additional $1,000 to eligible accounts for the children of its employees.

The airline said Monday that it will match the federal government’s one-time $1,000 seed contribution, which could potentially give thousands of children of American Airlines workers a $2,000 starting balance.

Trump Accounts, formally known as 530A accounts, are tax-deferred investment accounts that are available for US children under 18. Children born between 2025 and 2028 who meet the program’s requirements can qualify for the Treasury Department’s $1,000 pilot contribution.

More than 50 companies have now committed to making Trump Account contributions for employees in some form, according to the Treasury Department. Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Visa and other major employers have also announced matching or contribution programs.

The corporate involvement could become important as Trump Accounts grow from a government-seeded savings program into a broader employee benefit. Treasury guidance released in August allows employers to contribute as much as $2,500 per year tax-free toward employees’ dependents’ accounts. Workers will also be able to direct pre-tax money into eligible accounts through employer benefit plans.

American Airlines intends to introduce payroll deductions for Trump Accounts in 2027 once the relevant rules are finalized.

Another feature that could shape long-term returns is how the money is invested. Treasury has selected the low-cost SPDR Portfolio S&P 500 ETF as the default Trump Account investment and proposed allowing several other diversified index ETFs. This places the emphasis on low fees and long-term market exposure rather than cash savings.

The program is already operating at a huge scale. Treasury said in July that more than 6.5 million families signed up for Trump Accounts, including over 1.5 million children eligible for the government's $1,000 contribution.

American Airlines Stock Falls 1.54%

AAL closed Monday at $13.43, down 1.54% from the previous close of $13.64. Shares edged slightly higher to around $13.45 in after-hours trading.

The decline came during broader weakness among airline stocks rather than appearing to be a direct reaction to the Trump Accounts announcement. Delta fell 2.59%, United Airlines dropped 2.36%, and Southwest declined 2.80% during Monday's session.
