Nvidia is reportedly considering a $12.9 billion acquisition of Hugging Face, a move that could extend its influence from AI chips into model distribution, developer tools, and hosting.
Hugging Face has become a key part of the open-model ecosystem, hosting more than 2 million models and over 500,000 datasets through its AI hub. The reported deal has not been formally confirmed by either company, so the $12.9 billion figure remains unverified transaction reporting rather than an announced purchase.
Nvidia Could Move Beyond Chips
Nvidia already dominates the most profitable layer of AI infrastructure through its GPUs and CUDA software ecosystem.
Its latest earnings showed fiscal second-quarter revenue of $96.2 billion, up 106% year over year, while Data Center revenue rose 117% to $89 billion.
Buying Hugging Face would give Nvidia a stronger position higher up the AI stack. The platform is widely used to distribute models, datasets, and developer applications, while its Transformers framework is embedded in many training and inference workflows.
That expansion fits the broader investment story around AI chips and the growing importance of AI infrastructure beyond GPUs alone.
The Bigger Question Is Neutrality
The strategic value of Hugging Face lies partly in its role as a relatively neutral platform where developers can access models from competing companies.
Nvidia ownership could change that perception. Existing open licenses would still matter, but Nvidia could make its own hardware, inference services, and deployment tools the easiest default option for users of the platform.
That would give the company more influence over how open models reach developers, not just over the chips used to run them.
The issue comes as Nvidia continues to support open-weight AI while competition from companies such as Meta, Microsoft, and Alibaba intensifies across the model ecosystem.
Nvidia’s recent results show it has the financial capacity to expand aggressively beyond semiconductors, while the broader AI sector continues to shift toward vertically integrated platforms.
If the reported acquisition advances, the central question may be whether Hugging Face can remain a neutral gateway for open AI while becoming part of Nvidia’s expanding infrastructure empire.
