Mastercard Supports XRPL Hackathon as AI Payments and On-Chain Finance Take Center Stage
Mastercard is entering the XRP Ledger developer scene as a sponsor of the upcoming XRPL Hackathon, bringing a major global payments player into an event focused on the future of blockchain-based finance.
The 36-hour hackathon will run in New York on October 24–25, 2026, just ahead of Ripple’s Swell conference. Hosted by XRPL Commons, it will bring developers together with investors, institutions and other financial industry leaders.
Mastercard’s involvement is notable because the hackathon targets several areas transforming financial infrastructure: payments, stablecoins, AI, tokenized assets and on-chain lending.
Four Tracks, Four Opportunities
More notably, developers will compete across four tracks.
Protocol Innovation will focus on the XRP Ledger’s core technology, including amendments, client implementations and developer tools. A Core Dev Bootcamp running October 20–22 will also give participants a deeper look at XRPL development.
Agentic Finance will explore how autonomous AI agents can securely transact on-chain. As AI moves toward performing tasks independently, machine-to-machine payments and automated settlement could become increasingly important.
Lending & Borrowing will focus on XRPL’s emerging credit infrastructure, including the XRP Ledger Lending Protocol, XLS-66 and Single Asset Vaults under XLS-65, which are progressing through validator voting.
The Why Not track gives developers room to pursue ideas that fall outside the other categories.
Why Mastercard’s Involvement Stands Out
Mastercard’s sponsorship adds weight to the event, particularly given the company’s growing interest in blockchain and stablecoin infrastructure.
XRPL Commons has previously pointed to Mastercard’s exploration of RLUSD settlement on XRPL through its program with Gemini. That connection makes the sponsorship particularly interesting, placing Mastercard alongside developers building potential applications for next-generation payments and financial services.
What’s the notable significance? Well, it boils down to the opportunity to develop solutions around programmable payments, stablecoin settlement, AI-agent transactions and on-chain credit, areas where blockchain could increasingly overlap with traditional finance.
With XRPL’s ecosystem continuing to expand, the timing is significant. Developers will have 36 hours to turn ideas into working products before presenting them in a city filled with major financial and blockchain players.
If standout projects emerge, Mastercard’s presence could help connect promising XRPL innovations with the broader payments industry.
Ultimately, the October hackathon could provide a glimpse of XRPL’s next chapter, one that extends beyond payments into an ecosystem where AI agents, stablecoins, tokenized assets and decentralized lending share the same financial rails.
