XRPL President: XRP Ledger's Native Features Are Built for Institutional Finance
The XRP Ledger's biggest strength, according to XRPL Commons President David Bchiri, is that it was built with a clear purpose from day one: moving value quickly, securely, and at low cost instead of trying to do everything.
Speaking with the XRP Ledger Foundation, Bchiri said XRPL's contrarian approach to consensus was what first attracted him to the network. Rather than relying on energy-intensive mining or traditional proof-of-stake systems, XRPL was designed as a high-performance settlement layer optimized for speed, efficiency, and reliability.
"I was attracted by the contrarian approach of the XRP Ledger consensus mechanism," Bchiri said, emphasizing that the XRPL has consistently prioritized real-world utility over following blockchain trends.
He also praised XRPL's philosophy of building essential financial capabilities directly into the protocol instead of relying on external smart contracts. Native features such as the decentralized exchange (DEX), Automated Market Maker (AMM), tokenization, batch transactions, and upcoming privacy enhancements, he said, make the network more secure and dependable.
"Building features [Batch, DEX, Privacy, AMM, Tokenization..] directly into the XRP protocol is brilliant," Bchiri noted.
XRPL's Native Lending Protocol Could Unlock Liquidity, Yield, and Institutional Growth
Describing XRPL as a lean mean settlement machine, Bchiri said every protocol upgrade is designed to strengthen its core mission as an enterprise-grade payments and settlement network without sacrificing performance through unnecessary complexity.
One of the network's most significant upcoming upgrades is the native XRPL Lending Protocol. Unlike many DeFi platforms that depend on custom smart contracts, the feature will be built directly into the XRP Ledger, benefiting from the same rigorous security standards as the core protocol.
The Lending Protocol will enable users, institutions, and developers to lend and borrow XRP and Ripple USD (RLUSD) natively on XRPL, unlocking new sources of on-chain liquidity while allowing idle assets to generate yield in a more secure environment.
Looking ahead, Bchiri pointed to XRP yield opportunities, accelerating institutional adoption, and major announcements expected around Ripple Swell 2026 as key catalysts for the ecosystem.
He believes XRPL's combination of native financial infrastructure, enterprise-grade security, and efficient settlement gives it a distinct advantage as tokenized assets and institutional blockchain adoption continue to expand.
