TSMC Expands Arizona Investment

TSMC returned to the centre of technology news after reporting blockbuster second-quarter results and sharing  plans to expand its manufacturing footprint in the United States. The world’s largest producer of advanced chips said demand for artificial intelligence semiconductors is very strong and is expected to continue for several years.

TSMC Chief Financial Officer Wendell Huang described the outlook as “multi-year structural demand,” due to continued investment in AI infrastructure by major technology companies. TSMC is a key supplier to Nvidia and other chip designers, which makes its financial performance an important indicator of conditions in the global semiconductor industry.

The company is increasing its planned investment in Arizona to $265 billion, including a further $100 billion commitment that was announced to accelerate construction of fabrication plants, advanced packaging facilities and a research and development centre. TSMC’s first Arizona fabrication plant is already operational, with production yields reportedly matching those at its flagship facilities in Taiwan.

Equipment is expected to be installed at the second Arizona fab soon, while construction of the third facility is already under way. Preparatory work has also started on a fourth fabrication plant and the site’s first advanced packaging facility.

Altogether, TSMC’s current and planned Arizona projects are expected to include 12 fabrication and advanced packaging facilities, as well as an R&D centre.

However, the company acknowledged that the expansion faces some practical challenges. Huang said shortages of construction workers and limits on available infrastructure could affect the pace of development. TSMC plans to work with the US government to address these constraints as it continues investing in domestic semiconductor production.

The Arizona expansion also supports US efforts to increase local chip manufacturing capacity. President Donald Trump repeatedly called for more semiconductor production to be moved to the United States and has set an ambitious target for the country to account for half of global semiconductor manufacturing capacity.

TSMC is also investing more in Taiwan, where it plans to build 13 leading-edge and advanced packaging facilities over the coming years. Huang said the company’s most advanced technologies must initially be developed and stabilised in Taiwan because of the close coordination required between research, development and manufacturing teams. Production can then be transferred overseas once the technology reaches a more mature stage.
