Tether Invests $20M in Ripple Partner Mercado Bitcoin, Strengthening XRPL's Tokenization Push

Tether has announced a $20 million strategic investment in Mercado Bitcoin, Latin America's largest on-chain financial services platform, further accelerating blockchain adoption across the region.

More notably, the funding will support Mercado Bitcoin's next phase of growth while reinforcing Brazil's emergence as a global leader in digital assets, tokenization, and blockchain-based financial infrastructure.

The announcement is particularly significant for the XRP community because Mercado Bitcoin is one of Ripple's most prominent institutional partners.

In 2025, Mercado Bitcoin partnered with Ripple to tokenize more than $200 million in real-world assets (RWAs) on the XRP Ledger (XRPL). The initiative brought fixed-income and equity products on-chain, showcasing how tokenization can improve efficiency, transparency, and accessibility in traditional finance.

Furthermore, it also underscores the XRPL's growing reputation as a blockchain built for institutional-grade asset tokenization.

Although Tether's investment is intended to fuel Mercado Bitcoin's overall expansion rather than XRPL-specific initiatives, it strengthens a company already developing key infrastructure on Ripple's blockchain.

As Mercado Bitcoin scales its platform and tokenization business, the XRPL ecosystem stands to benefit from greater institutional adoption and increased issuance of tokenized financial products.

Mercado Bitcoin Emerges as Latin America's Tokenization Leader After Tether Investment

Founded in 2013, Mercado Bitcoin has evolved from a cryptocurrency exchange into one of Latin America's most comprehensive regulated digital financial platforms. Today, it offers crypto trading, tokenized investments, stablecoin-powered payments, lending, banking infrastructure, and cross-border financial solutions.

The company serves more than 4.5 million customers, has issued over R$2 billion in tokenized assets, and operates under more than 10 regulatory licenses across Brazil and Europe. Its regulatory portfolio includes authorization as a Payment Institution by Banco Central do Brasil, alongside broker-dealer, securitization, and asset management licenses.

Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino described Mercado Bitcoin as a leading full-stack on-chain financial platform with a strong regulatory foundation, advanced tokenization capabilities, and integrated financial services.

He said these strengths make the company uniquely positioned in Latin America and expressed confidence in supporting its next stage of growth as both an investor and strategic partner.

Beyond Mercado Bitcoin, the investment reflects a broader trend that institutional capital is increasingly flowing toward companies building regulated blockchain infrastructure, stablecoin ecosystems, and tokenized asset platforms.

As the real-world asset market continues to expand, firms with proven technology and regulatory credibility are becoming increasingly attractive to global investors.

What’s the bigger picture? Well, Tether's investment in Mercado Bitcoin is an encouraging development for the XRPL ecosystem. Supporting one of Ripple's key partners reinforces confidence in the network's growing role in tokenized finance, a sector widely viewed as one of blockchain's largest long-term growth opportunities.
