Coinbase has taken a major step in bridging traditional crypto exchange activity with decentralized finance. The exchange now publishes its premium trading data onchain through Chainlink’s DataLink, allowing developers to access real-time market information directly on blockchain networks.
This integration brings institutional-grade datasets, previously confined to Coinbase’s internal systems, to DeFi applications, fueling smarter pricing, enhanced risk management, and new onchain financial products.
Expanding DeFi Access to Institutional Data
According to the press release, with DataLink, protocols can now tap into a variety of Coinbase’s datasets, including order books, spot prices, and perpetual futures data from both Coinbase and Coinbase International Exchange.
The integration also includes additional datasets from crypto, metals, energy, and equity futures via Coinbase Derivatives Exchange. Consequently, DeFi developers can create more sophisticated products, such as tokenized real-world assets, synthetic instruments, and next-generation risk engines for lending platforms.
Besides improving access to critical market data, this step strengthens trust between traditional finance and DeFi. By delivering reliable, secure exchange information onchain, Coinbase supports protocols in making better trading and lending decisions, which could attract more institutional participation in decentralized markets.
Institutional-Grade Infrastructure for Developers
Liz Martin, Vice President, Coinbase Markets, said, “Our benchmarks enable DeFi and TradFi developers to build more robust onchain apps across derivatives, tokenized assets, and more.”
By using Chainlink’s battle-tested data infrastructure, Coinbase abstracts the complexity of onchain data delivery. Developers no longer need to manage critical data pipelines themselves, freeing them to focus on innovative financial applications.
Johann Eid, Chief Business Officer at Chainlink Labs, emphasized the significance of the move, stating, “By delivering institutional-grade exchange data to blockchains, we are proving that the future of finance requires a foundation of uncompromising security.” He added that this integration sets a new standard for programmable market infrastructure and accelerates the convergence of traditional and decentralized finance.
Step Toward Cross-Chain Market Connectivity
This initiative builds on previous Chainlink collaborations, including Coinbase’s Base-Solana Bridge secured by Chainlink CCIP. Coinbase also relies on Chainlink for wrapped assets like cbBTC, cbETH, and cbDOGE, highlighting its growing reliance on oracle networks for secure interoperability.
