A Brief History

The origins of SatoshiLabs trace back to 2011 when founders Marek “Slush” Palatinus and Pavol Rusnák met at a hackerspace in Prague as Bitcoin and open-source enthusiasts. Drawn to the idea of securing private keys independently from internet-connected systems, they began experimenting with hardware wallet concepts. They were soon joined by Alena Vránová, and this early collaboration laid the groundwork for what would become SatoshiLabs.

About us

In 2013, after successful fundraising and community interest, SatoshiLabs was formally incorporated as a company. Their first major breakthrough came with the launch of the Trezor Model One—the world’s first widely adopted cryptocurrency hardware wallet.

Over the years, SatoshiLabs grew from a small team of innovators into a global technology group with multiple projects under its umbrella. In addition to hardware wallets, the ecosystem now includes services such as Invity (a crypto buy/sell/exchange interface), and Vexl (a peer-to-peer Bitcoin trading platform), reflecting the company’s broad ambitions within the crypto space.

The Connection Between SatoshiLabs and Trezor

The relationship between SatoshiLabs and Trezor is deeply intertwined—Trezor didn’t just emerge independently; it was created by SatoshiLabs. The company’s founders designed Trezor as a solution to a core problem in crypto: how to keep private keys safe from online threats while still enabling users to interact with blockchain networks securely.

Since its release, the Trezor hardware wallet has set industry standards for cold storage security and user autonomy. It stores cryptographic keys offline—protecting them from internet-based attacks—and enables users to confirm transactions directly on the device. This model dramatically enhances security compared with software wallets that remain connected to the web.

Over time, SatoshiLabs has supported and expanded the Trezor product line with multiple generations of devices (e.g., Trezor Model T) and ecosystem software like Trezor Suite, which provides an intuitive interface for managing assets and performing various crypto operations.

Why SatoshiLabs Matters in Crypto

SatoshiLabs has significantly influenced cryptocurrency self-custody and security. Its early contributions helped define industry best practices, like recovery seed backups, passphrase protection, and open-source firmware approaches—all of which are now standard components in secure wallet solutions globally.

Beyond hardware wallets, the company’s expanding portfolio reflects a holistic vision for user empowerment in Web3—combining tools that support secure storage, private trading, and easier onboarding into the Bitcoin ecosystem.

Conclusion

In an industry built on trust, decentralization, and personal ownership, SatoshiLabs stands as a pioneering force. From its humble beginnings in Prague to becoming the creator of the world’s first and one of the most trusted hardware wallets—Trezor—SatoshiLabs has played a pivotal role in shaping how individuals interact with and secure their digital wealth.
